“We are the goon squad and we’re coming to town beep-beep.” (David Bowie)
So near as I can tell it’s a chicken’n’egg thing. The fashion industries create new clothes and the people wear the new clothes that the … brrrrp. Stop – rewind.
I thought I knew something about fashion but I’ve just done a little reading and it turns out that I know nothing! All my carefully nurtured pre-conceptions about fashion houses being evil overlords, forcing us to wear clothes for a season and then declaring us to be out of fashion a single season later. S’not true you know. No it’s not.
They are actually looking out for us. They are dedicated to bringing us clothes for every conceivable occasion at prices that won’t break the bank. Yay for the fashion houses!
Oh, wait – just had a thought: maybe I’m getting them mixed up with mass markets or supermarkets.
Yeah, okay. Got it now. Here’s how it is:
- design
- catwalks
- rich people
- rich folk buy
- rich folks in mags
- poor people read mags
- poor people want what they see
- mass producers listen to poor people
- mass producers do cheap knock-offs of designs
- back to square one for those wonderfully busy designers.
Don’t you just got to love the wonderful fashion industry, the ever nurturing fashion industry, the beautiful and beautifying fashion industry!
I was going to show you a gratuitously beautiful model wearing something smart, sexy and practical but then realised that there are a million blogs out there doing that so why follow the herd.
But then again – why not?
… and because I’m kind and loving person – here’s one for the girls:
I wear what I like no matter if it’s in or out of fashion. I am all about being comfortable and being in fashions doesn’t interest me in the least. I don’t need to rush out and buy something just because it’s now in fashion. I look pictures of models on the runways and look at what they are wearing and think…. hmmm, no thank you. Would rather wear jeans or yoga pants and a t-shirt.

Well you see – that’s a fashion all by itself. Someone has sat down in a room with your demographic and thought to themselves ‘I wonder what someone who’s all about being comfortable etc. would wear,’ and then they took out their pencil, sketched the exact outfit you’re wearing – yoga pants and all then voila – it got made and you went out and bought it! 😉
Clever people, these (anti) fashion designers. 😀

Jeans and t-shirts have been around for years and the older the jeans are the more comfortable they are. New ones can be too stiff and scratchy unless you get the ones that have already been washed and stuff. I told a kid who was buying distressed jeans with worn out and thread bare spots here and there plus some faded patches of fabric… “Kids are SO spoiled now. When I was growing up we had to wear our OWN jeans out not just buy them that way.” His mom and I had a good laugh about that.

Yeah I’m with you Orpha, for me it’s about being comfortable. I like to look good but prefer to do it in my own style rather than try and copy what’s in. Jeans, t-shirt, boots … that’s me. 🙂

Right now I’m wearing pajamas, a robe, and moccasin slippers than feel like I’m not wearing shoes at all. No fashion statement at all. LOL

Sounds like my type of gear! If it wasn’t pick up time at school I’d probably be wearing the same! 🙂

So long as you leave me with my Batman boxer shorts, I’m cool. A man has to retain a little dignity (and no – that wasn’t a euphemism)! 🙂

Tempted to say ‘you have a great blush’ but being as you’re wearing my clothes it just don’t feel right somehow.
Yeah – that doesn’t make sense at all – I know.

Embrace your own style. By the way. I tried to reply to your comment on my art and WP isn’t having it. Basically, I said feel free to comment anywhere you like, always fun to engage with you. I’m humbled you get my poetry. Don’t let the riffraff scare you off. Ha-ha As for the painting, I use resin. What else, I lost my religion and fashion sense long ago bringing it back around to you. Happy Thursday, mate. Cheers xx

I just embrace what I’m comfortable with as far as clothing goes. Unfortunately I’ve been stripped to my Batman boxer shorts at the moment because Miriam (see other comments on this post) has nicked my usual Levis and t-shirt.
On a totally other subject, I was up for ages last night to get your post to accept my comments! I finally managed it this morning but, boy but you ain’t easy girl!
Good advice about your other minions – I guess I was just feeling obscurely insecure at the time. I’m going cold turkey this week and it’s quite difficult. Chocolate addiction is a serious thing you know – stop laughing! 🙂
I can just hear your voice when you say ‘what else?’ and I just said it myself … and the answer is: Happy Thursday to you too, Tosha! 🙂

Yes. I couldn’t reply to you there. It must be the settings. Highly annoying. Sorry about your clothes, man. I don’t blame her though. Comfortable is where it is at. Chocolate is my drug of choice at least when cocaine is not available. I’m kidding. Geez.

That’s alright – I love having you over here (smiles to himself for his own obscure reasons). Sorry there’s no cocaine here, but I do have seven and two fifths 125g bars of Marks and Spence Swiss Chocolate in my drawer and I ain’t eating them right now.
Yeah – I hope she’s comfortable in my clothes too. 🙂
Trying to think of something to keep you talking … erm … erm … how’s the weather there now?

Dude, jealous over the chocolate. That was the best part about the time I spent in Britain. It’s hot here. I’m not feeling it. I’m ready for fall and it’s not even officially summer. Sigh. No. Dramatic sigh

Drama queen, dairy queen, where’ve you been? Sights you’ve seen?
Okay – head’s gone now. When did you come to Britain, and why and where? You coming back soon?

I’ve been four times. I came over to help my friend put on some anti Human Trafficking Rally’s a few years back. I didn’t see your part of the country. Most of my time was spent in London. I did get Hastings and the Cliffs of Dover. I hope to go back over sometime next year.

I’ve been to the US about three times too – once to Noo Yawk when I was about 25 (dirty, smelly place) then again to the same place about a decade later (it was actually a bit better the second time) and from there I went upstate to visit a retreat up a mountain, then the third time was to Hawaii, which is one of a short handful of places in the world that I could see myself living. I’ve been desperately wanting to visit Texas for a about half a decade now but can’t seem to swing it. Apparently everyone that lives there is a serial killer so that seems to put everyone I know off the idea. Still, the culture and music scene seems amazing. All that twanging and crawling – what’s not to like!
It’s okay to base my entire impression of a state on TV programmes – right?

Oh God. I lived in Texas for a few years. I hate it. Of course, I will always be a Carolina girl at heart. New York City is a lot cleaner these days. I love to visit but wouldn’t want to live there. I’ve never been to Hawaii. Jealous.

In what ways are Carolininians different from Texans? Or is it the climate or scenery you didn’t like?

Where I live it’s very green and we have lots and lots of pine trees. The part of Texas I was in was very flat and there weren’t a lot of trees

Hi Robert, a nice take on fashion for sure! As long as supermarkets and discount stores can deliver similar quality and design that those fashion powerhouses will at tenth of the price – I don’t mind the process!
